The Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2010

The Vegetarian Festival was something that I looked forward to every year and I was not disappointed. There is a reason as to the festival – have a look here and here and here.

I am sorry but I was not a Vegetarian this time but it did not detract from my enthusiasm – okay next year I will go Veggie – Congratulations to Jamie.

Thursday October 14th

I visited the festival parade in Phuket Town with some of our guests from the hotel, as we did last year, not all of them chose to return again......... The visit was a pleasure – but secretly I think that I was more excited than the guests are.

The parade was a plethora of pierced people, men and women possessed and men shaving their tongues – wonderful, the furore was fabulous.  I ran around the whole parade taking photographs – the firecrackers were the most exciting.

I did not go to the bladed ladder walking because there was too much rain at my end of the island – just as well as I had to get up at five the next morning.

Friday October 15th

I visited Kathu Shrine early and was amazed that the temple was full of people all dressed in white – and witnessed the actual piercing take place – exhilarating!

I met Jamie and wanted a new camera (maybe next year I will rent one) and then we watched the believers leave the temple amid much chaos.  At this point I lost Jamie ………. More to do with me chasing the bangs…

I walked with the parade, carrying the deities, having a drink and losing my shoes – fabulous.  I walked and walked until I found a shop selling coffee – which I eventually found.  BUT I did not pay them the correct money – sorry I will come back.  By this time it was pouring down with rain – what the heck, I carried on…

I stopped at Clinic Kong in Phuket Town and got a blessing from a medium and more bracelets………..

We arrived at Sapan Hin and gathered on the lakeside – piercing, possessed and followers – amazing that there were no accidents – the 'Chief' said a few words and we turned around and came back.

As I returned I recognised that I was soaked and was not wearing shoes – so I went into a shop, stripped off changed and went for a coffee at Coffee Lovers.

In the evening I returned to Phuket Town to watch the fire walking – now this was very hot, okay I know that scientifically this is simple BUT… there were a couple of men who did actually walk though.

I would do this rather than pierce my self… anybody wants to sponsor me?

Saturday 16th October

The last day and I was blown away!

I joined the throng in Phuket Town – there were some of the possessed walking and the thrones being carried and a plethora of followers.  The streets were lined with people all dressed in white and all throwing a type of incendiary device – this was ‘rawer’ then previously and the excitement was coursing through my body.

As I walked through Phuket Town and to Sapan Hin the chaos became more fevered – the adrenaline was abundant in the participants and the viewers – I stayed in the crowd…

We went to the banks of the river and the Head Medium left on a fishing boat and a mountain of Chinese paper and fire crackers was lit – rockets were fired and the chaos started all over again.

I walked round the park taking possible video footage and I was bombarded with fireworks from the crowd – another rush of adrenaline – there was so many fireworks thrown that some were lodged in my pocket and melted my iStick and my shoes were burnt.

With a deep breadth I left it all behind me – vowing that next year I would do a little bit more…

Chulalongkorn Day - 23rd October

This is a Public holiday to commemorate the reign of King Rama V
- he is best remembered for abolishing slavery.

End of Buddhist Lent Day - Oct 23rd

This is a special day which is marked in a number of different ways throughout all of the provinces in Thailand.

It is the end of the three month rain retreat for Buddhist Monks - I may go to a temple to make merit - watch this space.

Too many hotels in Phuket

Phuket Gazette
This is an interesting comment which has surfaced again.  This time there is a call for 600 Baht a night to be the lowest price that can be given.

This reminds me of the DVD saga - 60 Baht is the lowest price that can be given to a buyer - if the seller offers you less than they can be reported....

But these is business - there is far too many hotels on Phuket already so why does the Government allow more to be built?

There are limits placed on the amount (and type) of taxis that are allowed on the island.

BUT in this world of competition surely the best thing to do is to allow the businesses to fail, but we are being asked to protect them from themselves.

Discussion corner here - what do you think?

Medical for being fit to drive

The Thai authorities have introduced a new scheme which aims to improve road safety and that is that all drivers must pass a medical - not a bad idea - but it does not mean that they can drive!

More paperwork........

Then I read a fact that the certificate (I read) is very easy to procure and can be purchased over a counter - legitimately and am forced to think again...

Read what other people think

Motorbike helmets - it's working

It's working and now I read that that this Helmet law will be throughout the whole of Phuket on the 1st of January  !

I have read a lot about this (and written here) and from as a cyclist there are a lot more people wearing motorbike helmets - were these two riders  fined?

I haven't see this machine again.

But just in case you have forgotten these are the fines.

500 Baht for not wearing a helmet.
If the passenger is not wearing a helmet the driver pays an additional 1,000 Baht!

Wonderful picture added from Phuket Heritage
How much does the Vegetarian Festival cost?

Then there is a drive for human blood to be donated.

But there will be a lot of people.

Nice to know that the Police will not attempt to control it.

Then there is the Phuket Heritage facebook site to help you

and

the Phuket Vegetarian facebook

and of course

Jamie in Phuket facebook.

Don't forget that Tamachad / Natural in Phuket Town is closed until after the Vegetarian Festival.

Does Health and Safety translate into Thai?

Phuket News: September 2010

How did this happen - the car "slid up'?
I tried to keep up with the news whilst I took a holiday to Australia - which was wonderful.  So what did I read when I returned?

More Dengue fever cases in Phuket!!! - ouch, I have to admit that I have had it once - not again please.

A Norwegian falls for the scam of an ATM - 20,000 Baht!!!! The tourist was told that the card had been taken and so the tourist went into the bank - and the money left. Guess I won't criticize the bank for putting a limit on my withdrawls.

Tsuami buoy not working - again.

Will the bars in Patong and other bars in an 'Entertainment Zone' be allowed longer hours? Sorry for the bar next door which would have to close..

A two-headed turtle dies - in the Similan Islands - but it is an excuse to have a look for a photo.

Read about Phuket being compared to London - the violence is on the rise in Phuket.
50 dead foreigners already this year - a shotgun shoot out - foreigners - watch this space carefully.

Then an Australian dies in a hotel swimming pool.... there should be a lifeguard on duty?

A thief returns religious icon because they brought him bad luck -  and is arrested

A wonderful man running a wonderful restaurant - La Gaetana - Gianni Ferrara is written about in the Phuket Gazette.

You go to a funeral and the 'corpse' is not the person that it should be - a good story line and I think that i have read the book - BUT it is true!!!

A sea gypsy cultural center - budget approved.

Did you know that the Phuket Ciity Incinerator is contracted to burn 300 tons of trash a day - i reckon that those people collecting the rubbish on their bikes would have trouble if it did.

After helping replant some mangroves I read that 3 Rai of mangroves had been cut down before someone noticed?

Planting mature sugar palm trees at Cape Phromthep to preserve it.

More about the tunnel - a Korean project? - isn't there something better to build in Phuket?

Phuket to Chang Mai buses - coming soon....

Blue Elephant Restaurant - wonderful Royal Thai food with elephant sized prices - will I get a free invite?

The front page made me breathe a sigh of relief
Patong Police - "Corruption is impossible"

"We only take a tourist's passport in cases where there is jail time is a potential punishment" - if you refuse to pay your bills for no helmet - is it a potential for jail time?

The Evason in Rawai has a Middle Eastern menu - a special Halal menu - we get asked for a restaurant specializing in Halal food every so often. Any ideas?

Thai superstitions and what I found out.....

What began has a harmless chat to promote discussion / reading / writing and listening became something else when I tackled the idea of a
'Superstitions' in Phuket'.

So what did I learn from my class?

1) DO NOT walk through a door if a gecko falls down in front of you
2) If a picture falls over and the glass breaks - you will die soon
3) If you run backwards seven times around your house and them look backwards between your legs you will see a ghost
4) DO NOT walk to a funeral with the picture of the dead one facing you
5) DO NOT walk into an exam right foot first
6) If you see a black cat jump over a coffin of a corpse - you will die soon
7) If an owl sits on the roof of your house - you will die soon
8) DO NOT cut your nails in the dark
9) DO NOT cut your hair on Wednesday
10) DO NOT brush the floor in the night time
11) DO NOT use a broken comb
12) DO NOT sing whilst you are cooking because you will get an old husband.

Then I found this amazing site where there are literally hundreds of them - I do not think that I will have a discussion with my wife regarding which ones are right - thank you to Richard Barrow for doing all my work.

Now I know why I have bad handwriting
it will give you bad handwriting

NEVER serve noodles at a funeral is one I just found.....

Then you have to be wearing the right colour......

Bite your shoes before you wear them for the first time to
prevent them from biting your feet.

Enjoy.
