Your Visa and Your Overstay

I was made aware by a guest from the UK last week that there was no charge for their visa? - which was a step to encourage people to visit Thailand after all the disturbances

Then I read of jail time for people who overstay their visa -  ouch, so please ensure that your visa is for the full duration that you are here.

I do not know exactly what will happen if you do overstay - there is no printed statement - but maybe gone are the days of the visa run OR payment at the airport - watch very carefully.

Below is a summary of the regulations.

SUMMARY OF CURRENT OVERSTAY REGULATIONS IN THAILAND:

Under the Immigration Act 2522 overstay is punishable by a jail term of 2 years and/or a fine of maximum 20,000 baht.

"Section 81 : Any alien who stay in the Kingdom without permission or with
permission expired or revoked shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding
two years or a fine not exceeding 20,000 Baht or both."

Spirit Lanterns - a hazard?

I have had witness to these Spirt Lanterns on a number of occasions - Weddings being the usual event.  Then I read on the BBC about the hazard that it causes them in the UK with livestock ingesting them.

English language - Phuket buildings

As I began teaching this year the staff were interested in their local area
Best Point.
What does "best point" mean?
Next to a mosque?

Then "best point" was opposite a cemetery.....

The secretaries discussed the difference between a town and a city, rural and urban.
Then I saw Ao Makham - city.

It may be all about marketing but it was confusing for my pupils.

Phuket Lifeguard's 3rd Annual Carnival - Sept 11th

I wish them good luck with this one - I have been following the stories about there being no lifeguards on the beaches of Phuket - does that mean there will be no one there OR are there no red flagged beaches at the moment?

Phuket News: August 2010

2 new companies are allowed to operate 30 limousines at the airport - they have to use a meter and are not allowed to charge more than 100 Baht 'start up fee'. This comment made me smile

"we also want the taxis that operate around the rest of the island and beach areas to use a meter system"

"it is still unclear when it will become mandatory for the rest of the island's taxis to use meters
BUT the 'start up fee' is agreed at 20 Baht"

A cock fighting ring was uncovered and participants arrested.  BUT I then read that Cockfighting is permitted under the Gambling Act of 1935...... why were they arrested?

A seminar in focusing on Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese heritage plans to develop a historical trail around Phuket Town - a "living museum". I look forward to this one.

Been told that I really should go and support the local football team - as they won their last match 4-1.

Then I read that a pregnant girl is forbidden to go to high school to continue their studies.

A girl who fakes a suicide for sympathetic cash is a bold and creative commentary? (letters page in the Phuket Gazette) - i do not understand that one.

Phuket decide to do a survey of all the foreigners in Phuket - but don't the airport have all that data somewhere? I am not looking forward to Absolute Holidays contacting me!!!!!

A con artist gets 200,000 baht from a tourist's ATM card - Ouch. Then another scam for hard cash - the phone line to confirm the transfer was engaged because the con-artist was speaking to them.......

A Molotov cocktail is thrown into a guesthouse because the former guest had argued with the management - guess I should be more careful next time........
