Street Art - Klong Ong Ang Canal (1)

There is not really a lot more than I can write about Street Art alongside the Klong Ong Ang Canal.

I wonder how long it has been there.

I imagine that they are painted when I am at work as I have only seen them being painted once.

TEXT is from Bangkok River.

Some of Thailand’s best-known street artists participated in the Ong Ang Canal project that joins Rattanakosin and Chinatown.

Rattanakosin was established as Thailand’s capital in 1782 by King Rama I. Palaces, temples and government offices have been built on the island by successive Kings of the Chakra Dynasty ever since. Rattanakosin is known as an island because of the Chao Prhaya River to its east and two canals that circle the district to its west. Klong Ong Ang is the second canal of Rattantakosin.

Ong Art Street Art is a project championed by the Governor of Bangkok, Asawin Kwanmuang, staged in partnership with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and companies Au-Rai Panich and ATM Spray. The project aims to turn the canal bbetween Panupan Bridge and Dum Rong Sathit Bridge into a new landmark for tourism and leisure.

Many people know the royal palaces and the temples of Wat Arun and Wat Pho. Bangkok’s Chinatown is one of the largest outside China and a favourite destination for Bangkokians and travellers alike. Klong Ong Ang sits conveniently between the two. The canal refurbishment programme includes new canal walls, paved canal sidewalk and even solar powered ferries for public transport.

Stroll along the canal to see murals by Alex Face, Bigdel, Pakorn & Asin, Bonus Tmc, Mauy & MSV, Alaii, Joker EB and other artists from Happening group. The murals capture the essence of old town Bangkok, portraying characters associated with the neighbourhood on walls both sides of the canal.

I recognise the Alex Face Street Art because I first encountered it when I lived in
Phuket and went for a bicycle ride.
