Propitiation of Seven Stars - Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2012

Sometimes we all forget - including me - that there is a reason to the Vegetarian Festival and that the prayer, not eating meat and the respect that the people show has a meaning.

With all the smoke, noise, piercing and blood that I see I have tried to visit places and ceremonies which I do not usually visit. This time it was the 'Propitiation of Seven Stars' at Lim Hu Tai Su Shrine (Samkong).

There are specifically Nine Emperors are the seven stars of the North Big Dipper of the North Ursa Major and 2 smaller assistant stars and this is what the ceremony is paying respects to.

On arrival the streets were packed with vendors selling Vegetarian food - glad to hear that the rent for these spaces goes to the Shrines and not the land holder. The atmosphere was clearly tense and the street is gathered with people dressed in white all waiting for something to happen, occasionally tossing a firecracker and a number of drums .

On arrival at Samkong Shrine the front was cordoned and a circle of fences erected around a tall decorated podium. On entering the shrine I was struck with the amount of people who were paying their respects at the shrine and the day was something which was clearly special to them.

At approximately 8 p.m the head 'shamen' arrived at the podium with his sword and climbed to the top of the podium - firecrackers were lit and the ceremony began. Gradually (what I believe to be) men possessed - the Mah Song - by the spirits of their ancestors and / or Gods came out of the shrine. Nodding their heads rhythmically, dancing, waving flags and more.

Gradually the ground became full of the Mah Song. The shamen then began the ceremony - the people surrounding the podium all kneeled and joss sticks were distribute to us all.

The chanting started and the Mah Song all waved their flags rhythmically flags - this continued for approximately 15 minutes and the crowd began to disperse. At this time the  shrine and local people brought their Chinese effigies to be blessed by the Head Shamen.

A deep breath was taken by me and I left quietly.

Warrior Propitiation and Lantern Pole raising - Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2012

This ceremony marked the beginning of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival for 2012.  There was such an amazing environment I do not know how to translate this into words so I am simply going to record what I witnessed.

I arrived to a plethora of noises and smells - kids tossing firecrackers, drums being beaten and wood being burnt - wonderful.

The Lantern Pole was a long mast of prepared wood and a branch on top of it and it lay horizontal in front of Bang Neow Shrine.

The head 'shamen'? and his 'team' then went to each corner of the temple grounds - placed a flag, rice was thrown and on one occasion a dance performed - a blessing of Bang Neow Shrine...

The shamen returned to the pole and a specific paper (with Chinese hieroglyphics) was then put on the pole - the Shamen then painted something on these pieces.

The pole was now ready to be raised - heavy rope was attached to the pole and people braced themselves. I then noticed that there was also yellow string attached to the pole and this string was held by the public.

On the count the pole was raised very carefully - interestingly the stone at the bottom of the pole was then wrapped in a bamboo mesh.

I then saw a member of the public pick up this yellow string and make themselves a small bracelet - I couldn't find any.

Meanwhile the Shamen then left the pole and returned to the back of the shrine - there was a stage set up. He climbed onto the stage where he then threw rice, I imagine blessing the ground? He was then handed a chicken and something done to the chicken whilst he was holding it - the chicken was then tossed to the floor and chased by the Shamen stabbing the stage with his shaft - he did not catch the chicken.

The focus then returned to inside Bang Neow Shrine - the Shamen seemed to be giving out instructions and directions - choosing his 'warriors'?

The Shamen abruptly returned to the pole in front of the Shrine where he was presented to by a number of people with magnificent Chinese costumes on - magnificent.

I left as night descended on Bang Neow Shrine exhausted and staggered by the amount of beauty and preparation that I had just witnessed - thank you.

Baby motorbike helmets?

I have written here previously about wearing a helmet whilst riding a motorbike but nothing prepared me for these two photographs in the same day!

Happy Birthday Jemma

Jemma was 5 on the 12th of October.

Presents were given in the morning.

A cake was decorated and children's food cooked and food for the adults bought.

The children began to arrive - presents were given, screams were shared, pictures painted, games played, food eaten and cake given.

"Don't forget to make a wish"
Thank you to everybody for coming and making the day so special.

Crab Mass Invasion

As we drove into Phuket Town last Sunday we were hardly surprised when we saw a lot of people crowded around the ditch on the side of the road.

We carefully made our way round the mass of people and my morbid curiosity got the better of me as I stretched my neck to have a look at the dead bodies.

What I did see was thousands of 'Mangrove Crabs'  - sour crabs / pu preaw - making the short trip into the Phuket Mangrove Development Station to lay their eggs.

Phuket is certainly a fascinating place.

Moon Festival - Festival of Harmony

I visited the Moon Festival for 'Otter's Tales' - the blog for Cape Panwa Hotel and I enjoyed the Festival enormously - thank you.

After leaving we visited the Weekend Market opposite Wat Naka for dinner - sticky rice and Fried Chicken. The market seemed to be festooned with tourists I did not realise that it had become such an attraction!

As we were driving home we were suddenly surprised by sounds of fireworks and chanting - there was a Dragon Celebration in a little known Chinese Shrine called
Jor Soo Kong Naka.

The atmosphere was electrifying - so much so that Jemma would not let go of me when we first entered. We were immediately bombarded with the noise of cymbals, shouting, a dragon dancing and much more.  I believe that the Head of the Village (Or Ba Tor) was here at first to welcome the dragon by placing a red (that colour again) in the mouth of the dragon.

After much cheering the dragon danced around and sprayed water from it's mouth onto all of the onlookers - I imagine that this a blessing. Following this the people who were watching gathered underneath the dragon and walked to the front of the dragon where they received a blessing.

Then we moved away from the furore and we watched a smaller (more traditional dragon) dance in front of others and receive a small donation.

Wonderful...
